The Devastating Transformation a Single Year Has Made in the US

One year ago, the environment was utterly different. Ahead of the American presidential vote, considerate Americans could recognize the nation's deep flaws – its injustices and imbalance – but they could still perceive it as America. A free society. A country where legal governance carried weight. A state guided by a respectable and ethical leader, despite his elderly years and growing weakness.

These days, in late October 2025, many of us hardly identify the land we reside in. People suspected of being undocumented migrants are rounded up and pushed into vans, occasionally blocked from fair treatment. The left side of the White House – is undergoing demolition for a grotesque ballroom. Donald Trump is targeting his political rivals or perceived antagonists and requesting legal authorities transfer a massive sum of citizen dollars. Soldiers with weapons are being sent into American cities under fabricated reasons. The defense headquarters, relabeled the Department of War, has effectively rid itself of regular press examination as it spends possibly reaching close to a trillion USD from citizen taxes. Universities, attorney offices, media outlets are submitting due to presidential intimidation, and rich magnates are handled as members of the royal family.

“America, only a few months ahead of its 250th birthday as the planet's foremost free society, has tipped over the limit toward dictatorship and totalitarianism,” an American historian, wrote this past summer. “In the end, faster than I thought feasible, it occurred here.”

Each day begins to new horrors. It is hard to comprehend – and distressing to accept – how deeply lost our nation is, and how quickly it has happened.

However, we know that the leader was properly voted in. Despite his deeply disturbing previous administration and following the cautions that came with the understanding of the conservative plan – even after the president personally stated openly he planned to rule as a tyrant solely at the start – a majority of citizens elected him instead of Kamala Harris.

As terrifying as today's circumstances may be, it's more frightening to recognize that we are just several months into this presidential term. Where will three more years of this downfall position us? And what if that period becomes something even longer, because there is nobody to restrain this ruler from opting that additional tenure is required, possibly for national security reasons?

Granted, all is not lost. There are midterm elections next year that may bring a different political equilibrium, should Democrats retake either chamber of parliament. We have government representatives who are attempting to impose certain responsibility, such as lawmakers that are launching an investigation regarding the effort to money grab by federal prosecutors.

And a national vote three years from now could initiate us down the road to healing just as the previous vote put us on this disappointing trajectory.

There exist countless citizens demonstrating in urban areas of their cities, as they did last weekend during anti-authority protests.

A former official, wrote recently that “the great sleeping giant of America is awakening”, similar to past after the Communist witch-hunt era in the 1950s or amid the Vietnam war protests or during the Nixon controversy.

During those times, the unstable nation eventually was righted.

Reich says he recognizes the signals of that revival and sees it happening currently. As evidence, he cites the large-scale demonstrations, the extensive, cross-party resistance regarding a personality's dismissal and the near-unanimous refusal by journalists to accept the defense department’s demands they solely cover authorized information.

“The dormant force perpetually exists inactive before some venality becomes so noxious, some action so disrespectful of societal benefit, some brutality so noisy, that he is compelled other than to stir.”

It’s an optimistic take, and I respect the author's seasoned opinion. Perhaps he will prove to be right.

Meanwhile, the major inquiries remain: will the nation regain its footing? Can it reclaim its standing internationally and its devotion to the rule of law?

Or should we recognize that the national endeavor worked for a while, and then – swiftly, totally – ended?

My negative thoughts suggests that the second option is true; that everything might be lost. My hopeful heart, though, convinces me that we have to attempt, through all methods we can.

For me, as an observer of the press, that’s about urging journalists to commit, more fully, to their mission of scrutinizing authority. For different individuals, it may be engaging with election efforts, or organizing rallies, or finding ways to protect voting rights.

Not even one year prior, we existed in a separate situation. In the future? Or after another term? The truth is, we cannot predict. The only option is try to persevere.
