The beloved police drama Line of Duty will make a comeback for its seventh installment, confirmed by the BBC.
A brand new six-episode season written by Jed Mercurio will begin filming in Belfast this spring, as confirmed by the production team.
The actress expressed excitement about the comeback, saying she was "so excited" about the series' return. Adrian Dunbar added, "How wonderful it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together soon."
The last series wrapped up in recent years with a final episode that attracted more than 17 million viewers. Rumors about a new season have been circulating ever since, but confirmation only came recently.
New Challenges for The Team
The seventh season will open with AC-12 no longer existing and renamed as the new police oversight body, as revealed by production details.
Steve Arnott, Kate Fleming, and Ted Hastings remain working to combat corruption within the police force.
Their work "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, these officers will take on their "most delicate case to date."
Fresh Face and Complex Case
An additional officer, DI Dominic Gough, described as a charming officer known for takedowns of criminal networks, is accused of misusing his authority to become a sexual predator.
However, his case could be a deliberate distraction from a larger danger still active in the background, plot details suggested.
In a statement, Jed Mercurio said: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the dedicated viewers."
"We're privileged to have had so many followers track the developments of AC-12 over multiple series and we couldn't be more delighted to be coming back for a seventh season."
He added: "Misconduct in the UK was thought to be over while Line of Duty was off air, so I've been forced to use my creativity."
Cast Reactions
The Scottish actor called appearing in the series as "a job of a lifetime".
"Beyond the program's popularity but the people I've worked with I now call some of my closest friends."
"I'm excited to wear the uniform again and reunite with everyone," he added.
Vicky McClure remarked: "It goes without saying I'm so excited the show is returning! Eager to work with Jed, Martin and Adrian again. The city, we'll see you soon!"
The veteran actor commented: "While anticipating the AC-12 days of Christmas, what a joy it is to know that the central trio will be working together soon."
"Delighted with the news and anticipating those unexpected twists and turns."
Show History
Line of Duty launched in the early 2010s and evolved into one of the most popular television series of the last decade, attracting notable actors such as Thandiwe Newton.
The BBC haven't revealed when the upcoming series will hit screens.
The finale of season six brought the long-running storyline about the hunt for kingpin known as "H" to a close, and producers said at the moment there were no plans for further series.
However, the network confirmed on this week that a new season is now in development.
