The State of Texas Top Legal Officer Sues Acetaminophen Makers Concerning Autism Spectrum Allegations

Courtroom Proceedings
The Texas Attorney General, who supports former President Trump who is running for US Senate, claimed pharmaceutical manufacturers of withholding the risks of Tylenol

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is taking legal action against the manufacturers of acetaminophen, claiming the companies hid alleged dangers that the pain reliever posed to pediatric cognitive development.

This legal action comes a month after Former President Trump advocated an unverified association between consuming acetaminophen - alternatively called paracetamol - during pregnancy and autism in offspring.

Paxton is filing suit against Johnson & Johnson, which formerly manufactured the medication, the exclusive pain medication recommended for pregnant women, and Kenvue, which currently produces it.

In a declaration, he claimed they "deceived the public by profiting off of pain and pushing pills without regard for the risks."

The company says there is no credible evidence connecting acetaminophen to autism.

"These companies misled for generations, intentionally threatening countless individuals to increase profits," the attorney general, from the Republican party, declared.

The company said in a statement that it was "very worried by the dissemination of inaccurate information on the security of acetaminophen and the possible consequences that could have on the health of US mothers and children."

On its online platform, Kenvue also stated it had "consistently assessed the applicable studies and there is insufficient valid information that indicates a proven link between using paracetamol and autism."

Groups representing medical professionals and health professionals share this view.

The leading OB-GYN organization has said acetaminophen - the primary component in Tylenol - is among limited choices for women during pregnancy to manage discomfort and fever, which can create significant medical dangers if not addressed.

"In more than two decades of research on the consumption of acetaminophen in pregnancy, zero credible investigations has conclusively proven that the consumption of paracetamol in any stage of gestation results in brain development issues in children," the organization said.

The lawsuit cites recent announcements from the former administration in asserting the medication is allegedly unsafe.

Last month, the former president caused concern from medical authorities when he told women during pregnancy to "resist strongly" not to consume acetaminophen when sick.

Federal regulators then issued a notice that doctors should think about restricting the usage of acetaminophen, while also mentioning that "a direct connection" between the drug and autism in children has not been established.

The Health Department head RFK Jr, who supervises the FDA, had promised in April to initiate "comprehensive study program" that would establish the origin of autism spectrum disorder in a matter of months.

But specialists cautioned that finding a single cause of autism spectrum disorder - considered by experts to be the consequence of a complex mix of inherited and external influences - would prove challenging.

Autism is a form of lifelong neurodivergence and impairment that affects how people experience and engage with the environment, and is identified using medical professional evaluations.

In his legal document, the attorney general - who supports Trump who is campaigning for US Senate - alleges Kenvue and Johnson & Johnson "willfully ignored and sought to suppress the research" around paracetamol and autism spectrum disorder.

This legal action aims to force the firms "eliminate any promotional materials" that states Tylenol is secure for women during pregnancy.

The Texas lawsuit mirrors the concerns of a assembly of parents of young ones with autism spectrum disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder who took legal action against the producers of acetaminophen in recently.

A federal judge rejected the case, declaring investigations from the family's specialists was not conclusive.
